LCL vs FCL, costs, and documentation for sea freight
Sea freight is the most common option for Arab traders importing from China. In this guide, we explain the difference between LCL and FCL, when to use each option, expected costs, and required documentation.
LCL (Less than Container Load) means shipping your goods with other traders goods in one container. FCL (Full Container Load) means renting the entire container for your goods only.
Use LCL if your shipment volume is less than 15-20 CBM. Use FCL if your shipment is larger than that or if you are shipping valuable or sensitive goods.
LCL cost is calculated per cubic meter (CBM) and ranges from $50-150 per CBM depending on destination. FCL is a flat rate per container: 20ft container ~$1500-3000, 40ft container ~$2500-4500.
